Metamorphosis Eco Tote Bag
Artist Note:
Metamorphosis tells the story of becoming one’s full self. I was particularly drawn to this project due to my own experiences in life. As a teenager and young adult, I experienced bouts of depression and have scars on my arms to remind me of those days. While they might not be traditionally viewed as beautiful, they remind me that I survived and show me my internal strength. Flash forward to the middle of 2020, and I became a mother. This was an amazing change for me but also a difficult one. I went from being a weightlifter in the best shape of my life to not being able to use the gym due to lockdown and preparing to bring my first child into the world with a very small support system around me. Turns out that people don’t flock to spend time with pregnant women in the middle of a pandemic (who knew?!). After an emergency C-section, I was tasked with rediscovering the body that had become a stranger. Stretch marks, scars, and a pouch right above my c-section scar was all I could see when I looked in the mirror. I’ve had to relearn how to love my own body- and it’s an ongoing journey. I have learned that this metamorphosis wasn’t damaging and disempowering; rather, it is a beautiful part of the human experience. Looking at my scars now, I see a story of someone that survived depression, brought a human into this world during a pandemic, and didn’t shy away from having surgery fully awake in order to save my child’s life. How freaking badass is that? These scars are beautiful; these scars make me a warrior.Â
